Arsenal suffered a 2-0 loss to Liverpool at the Emirates last night but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp reserved some special praise for Gabriel Martinelli.
The Brazilian started on the left flank yesterday and he looked really dangerous in the early moments. He caused Trent Alexander-Arnold all sorts of problems in the first 15 minutes, but he, like most of his teammates, stepped down a level after that period.
Diogo’s Jota’s brace gave Liverpool a comfortable win in the end and Arsenal should be disappointed with our performance and result. However, Martinelli has something to smile about.
Jurgen Klopp: Gabriel Martinelli is an outstanding player
The Liverpool boss was a happy man after the game. He knows how good Arsenal have been at home this season, but to see his side dominate the game for most parts and come away with a win was really pleasing for him.
The German was quizzed about the game after they booked a trip to Wembley last night. He heaped praise on his players but also had some nice things to say about Martinelli, who thoroughly impressed him.
Klopp said in his press conference after the game: “Martinelli, by the way, everybody should remember that name because he’s an outstanding player.”
We agree, Jurgen! Gabi is absolutely phenomenal.
Not the first time
Last night was not the first time Klopp has raved about Martinelli following a game between Liverpool and Arsenal.
Back in 2019, when the Gunners lost a Carabao Cup game at Anfield on penalties after a 5-5 draw, Klopp heaped praise on Martinelli. The Liverpool boss labelled him as ‘the talent of the century,’ and it’s clear that he’s still a big fan of the Brazilian.
Klopp said after that game at Anfield, as per Liverpool’s official website: “Martinelli’s pretty much the same age (as Sepp van den Berg) but he’s a talent of the century, he’s an incredible striker, so it’s really difficult.”
