When Arsenal signed Martin Odegaard on a permanent deal from Real Madrid last summer, Paul Merson was not a happy man.

The Norwegian spent the second half of last season on loan at the Emirates. He performed very well but his direct contribution of two goals and two assists really clouded many people’s judgement.

Merson branded Odegaard’s recruitment as a ‘mistake’ and a ‘lazy signing’ last summer, and he even went on to say that Mikel Arteta could lose his job. Now, the Englishman has admitted that he was wrong.

Paul Merson: I was wrong about Arsenal star Martin Odegaard

In his column on The Daily Star: “Martin Odegaard has proved me wrong and is becoming the leader Arsenal need to pass their toughest test yet. He is the main man there now and the first name on the team sheet for me.

“He has really improved and is doing the business. I think the players respect him because they can see he’s a real player. I didn’t see it at first, I have to admit. He’s Arsenal’s go-to man and he makes them tick.

“He isn’t a leader in terms of running around and kicking people or barking out orders. But in terms of the way he’s playing he is. The way he’s turned it around people are looking at him now and fair play, he has done very, very well. He always wants the ball and knows how to use it. That’s leadership too.

“I take my hat off to him because he’s top, top drawer. One of the best in the Premier League in my opinion.”

The Norwegian scored a stunner last night

Martin Odegaard captained Norway in their game against Slovakia at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo last night.

The home team were made to work hard and it took Erling Haaland 77 minutes to break the deadlock. Everyone expected Slovakia to have a go in what was left of the game, but Odegaard didn’t give them a chance.

The Arsenal man scored a beautiful goal just three minutes after Haaland’s opener to seal the game.

It’s safe to say, Arsenal fans loved his strike last night
