Arsenal are seeking to add to their midfield ranks in this summer transfer window.
Arsenal are currently working on a deal to sign Mikel Merino. Mikel Arteta has been pushing to bring the Real Sociedad man to the Emirates Stadium for some time.
It now seems that Merino is close to joining Arsenal. However, until such an agreement is signed, sealed, and delivered, anything could happen. On top of that, if the Gunners are reactive to the market, they may even be able to bring another signing in that part of the pitch on top of Merino, if not instead of the 28-year-old.
Arteta wanted Ilkay Gundogan last summer, when the midfielder left Manchester City. The German ultimately joined Barcelona, though.
With Gundogan having turned down Arsenal, as reported by Football.London, the 33-year-old was a key figure for the Spanish giants last season, making 51 appearances across all competitions.

Arsenal could get second chance at signing Ilkay Gundogan
Now, though, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, reporting on X: “Ilkay Gündogan can really leave Barça before the end of the transfer window.
“Not guaranteed yet but his camp has started exploring options for the final days as Barça are open to letting Ilkay go… solutions are being explored.”
On top of that, FC Barcelona Noticias report that the La Liga outfit believe that they can fetch a fee worth up to around £25 million for the midfield veteran.
This would make Gundogan a little cheaper than what Arsenal are expected to pay for Merino.
Given that Arteta is obviously a huge admirer of Gundogan, it could be that Arteta is willing to prioritise a move for the Barcelona man over Merino, or the Spanish coach could attempt to seal a deal for both.
Do Arsenal fans want Arteta to sign Gundogan?
Many Arsenal fans, however, are not convinced that pursuing Gundogan at this time, and at this late stage in his career, would be wise.
Taking to X to discuss the potential move, plenty of supporters shared their thoughts.
One said: “33 years old with a back problem no.”
Another stated: “He rejected us and moved to Barca so let’s keep it that way pls.”
One added: “Not happening. past his prime”
