Arsenal are planning to unveil Andrea Berta as the club’s new sporting director following Edu Gaspar’s shock exit.
The Gunners are nearing a crucial transfer window with regard to Mikel Arteta’s project, with another season without silverware unfathomable.
One of the downfalls of the 2024/25 campaign has been the lack of depth in attack, with Arsenal’s injury list throughout the season punishing Arteta.
Berta has a strong track record of signing forwards during his career as Atletico Madrid’s sporting director but, the front line isn’t the only area that the Italian could bolster.

Andrea Berta could sign a defender in the summer transfer window
Naturally, the focus of the summer transfer window will be signing at least one high-quality forward to add to the attack.
As well as eyeing a number nine, Arsenal are in a good position to sign Martin Zubimendi, who looks set to arrive from Real Sociedad to offer something new in midfield.
The attack and midfield need attention but, TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey suggested that the defence could also become a talking point.
“It’s definitely possible,” Bailey said in response to the possibility of Arsenal signing a defender.
Some fans might not be happy with the prediction, given that Arteta’s Arsenal signings have been dominated by midfielders and defenders, with less attention given to forwards.
While the prospect of another defensive signing arriving in the summer may be frustrating, Bailey explained why at least one new body could arrive.
“Lewis-Skelly has come in, they’ve got Calafiori but obviously Zinchenko could go, Tierney is going, Kiwior will probably finally get his wish of going back to Italy.
“Do Arsenal still like Jorrel Hato? A player that they loved at Ajax. I think a left-sider is possible.”
Arsenal were linked to Hato last summer, with Bailey pondering whether interest could resurface amid what is set to be a period of exits across the back line.
Triple defensive exit anticipated
As Bailey noted, as many as three first-team defenders could leave Arsenal at the end of the season, with one exit already confirmed.
Kieran Tierney will return to Celtic at the end of the campaign, which will lower Arteta’s numbers on the left side.
| Player | Apps | Starts | Minutes |
| Oleksandr Zinchenko | 16 | 4 | 481 |
| Jakub Kiwior | 16 | 8 | 911 |
| Kieran Tierney | 9 | 1 | 181 |
The same could happen with Oleksandr Zinchenko, who generated transfer interest in the winter market.
Having collected limited minutes this season, Jakub Kiwior could return to Italy following interest from Juventus and others, paving the way for a new defensive signing to bolster the numbers.
While the thought of another defensive signing does not seem as urgent as an addition to the front line, three exits could surely turn Arteta and Berta’s heads in the summer.
