Arsenal are already planning for the future, even in positions where they are currently very strong.

The Gunners have one of the best defensive units in Europe, but that has not stopped Mikel Arteta’s side from looking at long-term options.

Andrea Berta is now focusing on signing a young centre-back who could eventually replace Gabriel Magalhaes at the Emirates Stadium.

Two names have emerged on Arsenal’s radar, with one in particular standing out – Jacobo Ramon.

Arsenal step up interest in Jacobo Ramon as Gabriel Magalhaes’ successor

Arsenal are monitoring both Victor Valdepenas and Ramon ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, the latter is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about targets as the Gunners look to strengthen in defence.

The 21-year-old joined Como from Real Madrid last summer and has impressed with his performances under Cesc Fabregas.

A report from CaughtOffside claims that Arsenal scouts have watched him multiple times, and the feedback has been very positive.

Ramon is said to be seen as an ideal profile to eventually replace Gabriel and partner William Saliba at the back.

However, Real Madrid could ruin any potential deal because they have a buy-back clause and a 50 per cent sell-on clause inserted in Ramon’s Como contract.

That gives the Spanish giants an advantage and could also drive up the price significantly, just as in the case of Nico Paz, who Arsenal were tipped to sign.

Nevertheless, the Premier League leaders are said to be stepping up their interest as they plan for the future.

Be honest. Do Arsenal really need another defender?

Do Arsenal really need another centre-back?

While the interest in Ramon is understandable, a strong argument can be made that Arsenal do not need another defender.

Arteta already has Saliba, Gabriel, Piero Hincapie, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White, Jurrien Timber and Cristhian Mosquera, all of whom can play at centre-back. That is a lot of depth in one position.

On top of that, young Marli Salmon is coming through, and he is expected by many to become a superstar in the future.

Even if Arsenal are mainly just thinking about a long-term replacement for Gabriel, both Hincapie and Calafiori are already perfect options. They are young, versatile and have the quality to step up when needed.

For that reason, signing another centre-back should not be a priority right now. That said, a player with Ramon’s potential is always tempting, which is why Arsenal are keeping a close eye on him.
