Andrea Berta has to sign Viktor Gyokeres after what just happened in Arsenal’s Benjamin Sesko transfer pursuit

Now that the season is over, Arsenal’s pursuit of a striker is set to hot up when the transfer window opens on Sunday.

Andrea Berta is eager to sign someone who can compete with Kai Havertz, who suffered a serious hamstring injury in January after playing significant minutes.

Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are the two primary targets, with Alexander Isak deemed too expensive and unattainable.

While the former may have the higher ceiling, the latter is more likely to make an instant impact next season for the Gunners.

Berta and Mikel Arteta will have to consider this before they make their decision, although something else may ultimately dictate who they go for.

RB Leipzig want £92m for Arsenal target Benjamin Sesko

It was revealed earlier this month that Sesko’s release clause is reportedly around £68 million.

This figure is certainly slightly hefty for a player with his limited track record, although Arsenal would likely be able to negotiate with Leipzig to pay it over several instalments, perhaps with some performance-related add-ons included.

However, the Irish Independent now report that Leipzig are demanding €110 million (£92 million) for Sesko.

Even if the Bundesliga club have pushed this reported price tag into the ether to strengthen their position in negotiations, this is a staggering prospective fee for the Slovenian.

It certainly elicits red flags around the player and Leipzig, and around what the German outfit would eventually accept for the 21-year-old.

Arsenal should sign Viktor Gyokeres for £55m instead of Benjamin Sesko

It’s clear from the reporting that Leipzig are going to want any suitors to pay over the odds for Sesko.

On the contrary, Fabrizio Romano indicated last week that Sporting would accept less than £55 million for Gyokeres.

If the respective two price tags for the players are remotely accurate, then moving for the Swede should be a no-brainer for the Arsenal hierarchy.

As shown by the data above, Gyokeres’ underlying numbers are significantly better than Sesko’s, and point to someone who is likely to be prolific even in a much more challenging league.

Sesko may have the potential to develop into something Gyokeres can’t, but for a much lower price tag, Arsenal can acquire a player who is more of a sure thing in terms of what he can produce next season.

Berta and Arteta must let this determine which forward they pursue, with it becoming increasingly obvious that the Sporting man would be the more astute addition.
