Mikel Merino’s injury has given Arsenal something to do on transfer deadline day.
The Gunners signed eight new players in the summer, and all of them have had a positive impact. That is why Andrea Berta was not expected to dive into the market in the winter window.
However, reports have claimed that Arsenal are considering a move for a midfielder after Merino’s foot injury, which requires surgery.
Many different names have been thrown into the mix on social media, but there is one midfielder every Arsenal fan would love – Granit Xhaka.
Should Arsenal have re-signed Granit Xhaka last summer?
Arsenal fans want Granit Xhaka signed on loan to replace Mikel Merino
Xhaka had his problems with Arsenal fans at one point, but by the time he left the club, he became a fan favourite.
After a successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen, the Swiss international joined Sunderland in the summer, and he has been one of their best players.
Now, following Mikel Merino’s injury, Arsenal fans are urging Berta to sign Xhaka on loan until the end of this season.
One supporter tweeted: “Arsenal should loan Granit Xhaka back immediately so he can rightfully collect a Premier League winners’ medal. He’s already saved Sunderland from relegation, I’m sure they’d understand.”
Another wrote: “Someone get Granit on the phone. Sunderland are pretty much safe, Xhaka knows the club and would be a perfect six-month loan.”
“Granit Xhaka on loan, I said what I said. Sunderland are safe this season anyway. Let me have my fairytale, please,” said another.
Another Arsenal fan commented: “I would honestly give Sunderland a ring and see if they’d let Xhaka join us to the end of the season on loan. Give them £5-8m loan fee. I’m sure Xhaka would love to come back for a few months and get us over the line. Sunderland have little to play for the rest of the year, and they can add the £5-8m to their summer transfer kitty.”
“Loan Granit Xhaka. One last dance,” said another.
Would you take Granit Xhaka back at Arsenal on loan after Mikel Merino’s injury?
Six-month loan deal. Who says no?
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta still loves Granit Xhaka
Mikel Arteta saved Xhaka’s career at Arsenal.
The midfielder had his bags packed and was ready to leave after his fallout with the home fans at the Emirates, but the Gunners boss changed his mind.
Xhaka became an integral part of Arteta’s side, and even though it has been a few years since he left, the Spaniard loves him.
He said in a press conference just a few days ago, as relayed on Sky Sports: “I love Granit to bits, but if I have to play (against him) on the pitch, we go to war because I know how he is as well.
“But outside that, if I can help him with anything, I am there, for sure.”
We don’t think Sunderland will entertain any offer from Arsenal on deadline day, but if it can be done, it could become the fairytale that Xhaka deserves for everything he did.
