Arsenal’s midfield is set for a shake-up in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners will be looking to revamp this core department of their squad that currently lacks prime-age players.

Jorginho, Thomas Partey and Mikel Merino are all in the latter stages of their career, while Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly are still both inexperienced in the middle of the park at senior level.

That leaves Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice as the only players in their mid-20s in midfield at Mikel Arteta’s disposal, and thus, additions will be needed.

Martin Zubimendi is expected to sign from Real Sociedad, while the two elder statesmen could both depart the club.

Arsenal star Jorginho has agreed deal with Flamengo

While Partey could yet sign a new deal, Jorginho is on his way out of Arsenal.

The Italian will turn 34 later this year and has been very much on the periphery of Arteta’s squad this season, starting just nine Premier League games.

It was reported back in March that Flamengo were close to agreeing a lucrative contract with Jorginho, and these negotiations appear to have developed significantly.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the veteran deep-lying playmaker is set to join Flamengo on a free transfer.

He’ll sign a three-year deal with the Brazilian club and will complete his switch from North London to Rio de Janeiro in June.

Jorginho may have played his last game for Arsenal

A £12 million signing from Chelsea in January 2023, Jorginho will be remembered fondly at Arsenal.

Making 78 appearances for the Gunners over the last two years, he’s been a valuable member of the dressing room and has been largely impressive when granted minutes on the pitch.

Ultimately falling in the pecking order this season, that was always likely to be the case as his physical capacity diminished as he turned 33.

Jorginho’s final period at Arsenal may end sadly, due to the current chest injury that he’s suffering from.

Arteta was coy on whether Jorginho would feature again this season in his press conference on Friday, with the Italy international almost certain to miss the second leg of Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

For such a good servant, this would be an unfortunate way for the player to end his stint in N5.
