Arteta target now has ‘no intention’ of moving, he could have solved two Arsenal problems

Arsenal are set to sign yet another goalkeeper under Mikel Arteta, as current number two Aaron Ramsdale will leave and need replacing.

Ramsdale is set to move on three years after he arrived, but Arsenal do face an issue as interested parties may be reluctant to pay his asking price after a year on the bench.

Arsenal will sign a goalkeeper to replace Ramsdale, and there are several different options they can take. A young prospect could be a useful backup, with Ajax’s Diant Ramaj reportedly a target, or experience may be targeted in the form of Brighton’s Jason Steele.

A surprise move for Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was recently mooted. The Poland star played alongside Arteta at Arsenal before he departed in 2015, and an emotional return to North London may have been on the cards, but this no longer appears to be the case.

Wojciech Szczesny is set to stay at Juventus for one more year

A report from Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb has now revealed that despite Juventus signing a new goalkeeper in Michele Di Gregorio, Szczesny has “no intention” of moving until his contract expires next summer.

When the 34-year-old initially joined Juventus, he spent a season playing a rotational backup role for the legendary Gianluigi Buffon before eventually replacing him as the number one, and he now finds himself on the other side of the same scenario.

This comes as a blow for Arteta, as his former teammate could have solved two problems within the squad.

Szczesny played his final Premier League game for Arsenal on New Years’ Day in 2015, where he made two mistakes in a 2-0 defeat to Southampton.

He then fell out with Arsene Wenger after an incident in the hours that followed the game, and he was dropped by David Ospina, before eventually being loaned and sold to Juventus.

As a goalkeeper who featured in the academy, and someone who was passionate about Arsenal, Szczesny perhaps has some unfinished business in North London, and a return would have been excellent for him and his former side.

Arteta could have replaced Ramsdale with a top-quality goalkeeper with years of Champions League experience under his belt to provide competition for David Raya, and he would have also helped in terms of squad registration rules.

Szczesny qualifies as a homegrown player at the club, and with several Hale End products such as Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe potentially departing, he could have given Arsenal a boost in this regard.
