There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and he could now leave the club in the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old was dropped as Mikel Arteta’s first choice option following the arrival of David Raya in the summer, in a move which has been questioned by plenty.

Ramsdale has made just two Carabao Cup appearances since being dropped, with Raya given the nod in both the Premier League and Champions League.

With the European Championships coming up in the summer, Ramsdale may need to play regularly to give him a shot at the England squad, and a January departure cannot be ruled out according to Fabrizio Romano.

Aaron Ramsdale could leave Arsenal in January

Speaking on The Debrief Podcast, Romano revealed that Ramsdale could leave in January, but he is also happy to stay and try to win his starting spot back if he does not.

“I think it’s a possibility because he’s not playing but it’s not guaranteed as well,” Romano stated.

“It’s not easy … goalkeepers usually move when there’s a domino effect and at the moment we’re not seeing that effect, and in the January transfer window clubs are not usually changing their goalkeeper.

“Ramsdale wants to play more, but from what I’m heard he’s also prepared to fight for his place. I can also guarantee that he’s not a target for Chelsea and they’re not going to sign a goalkeeper in January.”

What should Ramsdale do in January?

Previous links to Chelsea will have caused controversy among the Arsenal fanbase, who hold Ramsdale in high regard after his performances last season earned him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year.

With clubs unlikely to spend big on a goalkeeper in the middle of the season, Ramsdale may have no choice but to fight Raya for his place, and he has previously welcomed the competition.

England manager Gareth Southgate has recently stated that Ramsdale may need to play more to feature in his plans for the summer, and this may cause some unrest with the 25-year-old if he feels he cannot earn an opportunity again under Arteta.

Arteta spoke about the benefits of rotating goalkeepers when Raya came in, but we are yet to see him experiment in this sense, with Ramsdale not even given an opportunity in the Champions League despite helping Arsenal qualify for it for the first time in over six years.

If this trend continues, it is hard to see Ramsdale not pushing for a move if a bid arrives, but as it stands, an offer big enough to tempt Arsenal into a sale feels unlikely in January.
