Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Arsenal have not given up on getting some incoming business done on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal are yet to make a signing in the current January transfer window.

A lack of available funds has been a major stumbling block for the north London club, who will be wary of breaching Premier League spending rules. Everton and Nottingham Forest were both recently charged with falling foul of such financial regulations.

Having spent heavily in the recent summer transfer window, bringing Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, and David Raya to the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners must now be careful not to land themselves in trouble as a result of splashing too much extra cash.

As a result, Mikel Arteta recently claimed that the club would not be able to make any additions to their squad this month, in a statement which was met with derision by Arsenal fan and TV personality Piers Morgan.

Could Arsenal still do some January business?

However, Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that this this decision to remain inactive as buyers may not be as final as it seemed. Speaking to GiveMeSport, the reporter stated, “as Arteta said, it looks complicated. It could be just something like a last minute opportunity as they had two years ago with Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna. He was a deadline day signing in the final hours because the opportunity was there and Arsenal decided to proceed.”

“But at the moment there is still nothing concrete, nothing advanced. As Arteta said, they are probably going to continue with the current squad. This is the feeling.”

There are a handful of reported transfer targets who Arsenal could likely afford to pursue deals for this month. However, the odds of them doing so remain slim.

Though, as highlighted by Romano, it would not be the first time that Arsenal have pulled a late deal out of the hat. Takehiro Tomiyasu was something of an out-of-the-blue arrival when he joined the club in a £19.8 million switch from Bologna on September 1st, 2021.

It would be wise for Arsenal fans to assume that there is no such surprise package on its way today though. Arteta’s full focus must now be on coaxing the very best form he can out of his existing squad as the Gunners prepare to make a Premier League title push in what remains of the current campaign.
