Though the Arsenal squad has evolved tremendously in recent years, the Gunners aren’t excused from making mistakes.

One issue that sporting director Andrea Berta has to resolve is how poor Arsenal are at selling players.

During the summer, the Gunners sanctioned a departure that epitomised the club’s struggles, as Albert Sambi Lokonga left for just £260,000.

The Belgian’s sale fee was difficult to comprehend, but for Arsenal, it was merely another financially disappointing departure.

The year prior was no different, as for just £4m, Arsenal sold Mika Biereth to Sturm Graz, and ever since, the striker has proven how terrible the decision was.

Mika Biereth’s market value has soared since he was sold by Arsenal

Arsenal thought they were smart by inserting a sell-on clause in Biereth’s contract, but when the clause was activated just six months after his transfer, the Gunners’ association with the player ended.

Though Arsenal earned a cash injection from Biereth’s sale to Monaco, the windfall came too early, as now, the striker is worth more than ten times his sale price.

Last month, Biereth’s market value sat at a high of £61.5m, and since then it’s risen again by millions.

CIES Football Observatory updated its market values in October, with Biereth adding another €4m onto his value.

Now sporting a market value of £65m, and a market value that is destined to grow, Arsenal are truly being made to look very silly for selling the Dane for less than £5m only 20 months ago.

Biereth left Arsenal red-faced

The sale looks comical now, but Arsenal’s blushes hit a new level last season when the 22-year-old experienced life away from the Gunners for the first time.

In the first half of the 2024/25 season, Biereth scored 14 times for Sturm Graz, which turned heads in Ligue 1 as Monaco swooped to sign the forward in January.

It took the former Arsenal academy talent no time at all to show his worth in France, scoring 13 Ligue 1 goals in only 16 appearances.

While Biereth was triumphing in his first full season away from Arsenal, the Gunners were struggling without a striker back in North London.

The Dane hasn’t looked back since leaving, but there’s a good chance that his sale has become a learning curve at Arsenal, who need to urgently learn from hastily cashing in on talent for painfully low fees.
