Gary Neville sends transfer warning to Mikel Arteta as Arsenal consider late Raheem Sterling move

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has now given his verdict on whether or not Arsenal should sign Raheem Sterling.

Arsenal are endeavouring to add to their attacking unit on Transfer Deadline Day.

Raheem Sterling has been linked with Arsenal, having been informed that he has no future at Chelsea.

However, a question remains as to whether Arsenal need to add Sterling to their ranks.

Gary Neville urges Arsenal to avoid Raheem Sterling

Ian Wright has told Arsenal to sign a winger. The iconic former striker believes that finding cover for Bukayo Saka needs to be the Gunners’ top priority.

However, Gary Neville is less convinced that this is an area of concern for the North London outfit.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (30/08/2024, 07:35), the former full-back highlighted the fact that on top of Saka, Arteta also has the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus to call upon in the wide areas.

The Manchester United icon left Reiss Nelson off his list, but the Hale End academy graduate also offers cover for Saka. However, Fulham are pushing to sign Nelson, so he may not be around to provide additional strength in depth at the Emirates Stadium for much longer. 

With these players in mind, though, Neville admitted that he couldn’t see the need for Arsenal to sign Sterling.

The pundit stated: “It doesn’t strike me as something that stands out and makes sense. Chelsea want him out… The Arsenal, United ones don’t seem to make sense to me, at this moment in time.

“He’s a very good player and would be, obviously, he would strengthen their squads, but they’ve already got strength in those areas.”

Manchester United have also been linked with Sterling.

Mikel Arteta’s connection with Raheem Sterling

Mikel Arteta is a fan of Sterling, and will be very familiar with what the 29-year-old has to offer, having worked with the attacker in his time as an assistant manager at Manchester City.

Sterling has praised Arteta in the past too. There is clearly a connection between the pair, and the Arsenal manager would surely back himself to help the 82-cap England international to rediscover his best form, having failed to impress on a consistent basis at Stamford Bridge.

However, Arteta has been reluctant to invest in older players in the past, and Sterling does not offer any long-term solutions for Arsenal. For that reason, he may be prepared to pass up on the chance to sign the Chelsea outcast.
