Ethan Nwaneri’s future at Arsenal is being discussed as the Gunners continue to evaluate his game time.

The 18-year-old enjoyed a magnificent breakthrough season last term, but now, his minutes have reduced.

Due to Arsenal’s increased squad depth, Nwaneri hasn’t played as much as he’d perhaps hoped, which is why the Gunners are carefully considering loaning him out.

Clubs were interested in Nwaneri in the summer transfer window, but he committed to Arsenal by signing a new contract, seeing his long-term future at the Emirates.

Ethan Nwaneri could leave Arsenal on loan in January

Arsenal are Nwaneri’s club, so there are no fears about whether the teenager’s stance on his long-term future has changed.

There is, however, naturally some thought going into where he could spend the second half of the 2025/26 season, given that he’s only played 165 Premier League minutes so far.

Should Arsenal send Ethan Nwaneri out on loan in January?

Amid speculation, journalist Dean Jones touched upon Nwaneri’s future when speaking on the Ranks FC podcast.

“I do wonder if maybe Ethan Nwaneri [could leave], I think that one might become interesting, and I can see there being plenty of interest in him,” Jones said.

“He’s just not getting any opportunities, and it’s so far a pretty wasted season for him. He can’t really have any complaints because of the level that Arsenal have been playing at.

“But a loan move from Nwaneri, I do think, has some legs. I can see that becoming a talking point.”

The update comes as no surprise, as the Hale End product has too much talent not to be playing regularly at a high level.

There are several clubs that Nwaneri could thrive at on loan, with the ball in Arsenal’s court regarding what steps the Englishman takes next.

Arsenal’s most successful loan earned them millions

Nwaneri is so highly rated, so it makes sense for the teen to leave temporarily, despite the fact that loans haven’t always been Arsenal’s preferred avenue of development.

The proof of such is in the numbers, as since the start of the 2024/25 season, only four players have left Arsenal’s academy to embark on loan spells, none sanctioned at the top level.

Arsenal have only loaned four academy players out since 2024! Is this a problem?

These are the academy loans Arsenal have sanctioned since the start of 2024/25, what are your thoughts?

There has, however, been one very successful loan in particular that Arsenal could learn from when it comes to Nwaneri, as Folarin Balogun’s time at Stade Reims in 2022/23 was fantastic.

The striker was only outscored by Kylian Mbappe, Alexandre Lacazette and Jonathan David in Ligue 1 that season, resulting in Arsenal bagging a fortune for their academy product.

The BBC quoted Balogun’s sale price as £35m, handing the Gunners pure profit.

Though Nwaneri’s possible loan wouldn’t end in a sale, the success Balogun gained from exposure to a high-level senior league is proof that the grass is sometimes greener on the other side.

It would be fascinating to see where Nwaneri could go if he were to leave in January, with so much in store for the 2007-born talent.
