Arsenal are set to complete at least one transfer on deadline day of the January window.
Deadline day got off to a flying start as Arsenal were linked to Sandro Tonali.
Rapidly, it became clear that Newcastle United have no intention of selling Tonali, and certainly not to Arsenal.
Andrea Berta’s hunt for a replacement for the injured Mikel Merino continues, and while the midfield is a priority, there’s an incoming on his way to bolster the attack.
Arsenal are set to sign James Wilson on loan from Hearts, with the reasoning behind the transfer now explained.
Fill in the blank: Signing James Wilson on a striaght loan would be a __________ deal from Arsenal…
James Wilson will sign for Arsenal U21 on loan
When the news broke, Paul Merson was confused as to why Arsenal are signing Wilson on loan.
Merson’s questions have been answered, as journalist Robert Grieve outlined the motivation behind the deadline day transfer.
On X, Grieve explained that Wilson’s loan won’t impact Arsenal’s first team in the slightest.
“James Wilson to Arsenal would be a loan to their U-21s. No option to buy,” Grieve wrote.
He added that the nature of the transfer is ‘effectively a trial’ for the teenager who simply isn’t playing enough at Hearts right now.
The news was followed by Sami Mokbel, who added that ‘If the teenager impresses in academy set-up they will sign him permanently.’
It’s a much-needed boost for Arsenal’s academy, who have been in dreadful form this season, with the idea of Wilson’s help being very appealing.
Arsenal’s academy will get a natural goalscorer in Wilson
Wilson isn’t too well known in England, but in Scotland, there’s huge promise about what the teenager will offer in the future.
Name three changes you’d like to see happen in Arsenal’s academy
Loans, U21 pathways, signings?
Former Hearts boss Neil Critchley described the incoming Arsenal loan signing as a ‘goal poacher’ back in 2024.
“That’s him, he’s a goal scorer, a goal poacher,” Critchley told STV.
“That’s what goal scorers do. They just arrive in the right position at the right time, and they find a way of hitting the back of the net.”
A boost in attack is exactly what Arsenal’s young Gunners need, which they will fulfil by acquiring Wilson.
