Martin Keown says ‘top-level’ Arsenal transfer target is like Ronaldo, but there is a catch

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has praised one Arsenal striker transfer target, comparing him to Ronaldo, but believes there is one problem.

It comes as the Gunners put their plans together for the summer transfer window, which will see the North London club enter the market for a striker option.

So far, it has been a problem position for Mikel Arteta, who lacks depth in that area following injuries for Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus – which will see them out of action for the remainder of the season, if not longer.

It’s something Arsenal fans have called to be addressed for some time, with the long wait to sign a striker now coming back to bite them.

As the summer approaches, it’s unclear exactly who will make their way to the Emirates Stadium, with plenty of targets touted.

One of those is Matheus Cunha, the Wolves star who has shown plenty of quality but other issues along with it.

Martin Keown compares Matheus Cunha to Ronaldo after Wolves display

Matheus Cunha has been linked with a transfer to Arsenal, following an impressive campaign for Wolves this season.

The Brazilian has been both a creator and a scorer for the side who have been struggling around the bottom of the Premier League.

His quality is clear, with Wolves knowing as much by tying him down to a new deal, in which Cunha has a release clause in it.

It could allow for a move to the Gunners, with his display against Bournemouth in the FA Cup displaying some of his best quality with a goal scored from range.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown discussed the star on BBC Match of the Day after, stating: “The ability he [Cunha] has is top-level.

“The goal he scores today belongs, not in the FA Cup, it belongs in the Champions League it’s that good.

“Give him too much space and he does this and that’s Ronaldo-like, that’s top-level, absolutely top-drawer finish.

“Strikes right through the ball, beautiful, ‘keeper isn’t getting anywhere near it.”

Cunha went from hero to zero though, seemingly striking Milos Kerkez several times in the final moments of extra-time.

The Brazilian received a red card for violent conduct, with Wolves going on to lose the penalty shootout just moments later.

On that moment, Keown said: “Then suddenly, we see the ugly. Kerkez gets involved and then that’s a right, left, kick and a headbutt, it’s the three-card trick really.

“I’ve not seen that on a football pitch since the 70s.”

It will now see Cunha suspended once again for Wolves, who is set to miss some important matches for his side this season.

Matheus Cunha’s discipline is a clear problem in Arsenal transfer race

Cunha’s discipline is a clear problem for Arsenal to consider when it comes to a possible transfer this summer.

The Brazilian is set to receive another suspension, following one he picked up earlier in the campaign for hitting out following a clash with Ipswich Town.

With the latest violent conduct red card now following, there will be at least a four-match suspension for the forward.

Adding a player who has suffered from those moments of head loss to an Arsenal side that has already suffered from disciplinary problems is a real concern.

The Gunners have already picked up more red cards than any other Premier League team this season, which has cost them points.

Cunha may only add further concerns to that, even despite all of the quality he has shown throughout the campaign.
