Mikel Arteta claims he is ‘very happy’ with Arsenal star amidst exit speculation

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been linked with a January exit in recent weeks, but Mikel Arteta has now shut down any talk of a departure.

The 25-year-old lost his place to summer arrival David Raya, and with the European Championships coming up this summer, it was speculated that he could push for a move away to try and gain a starting spot for England.

Wolves were recently named as potential suitors, and a long-term injury to Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope could have made them a possible destination. However, it seems that he will be staying put for the time being.

Mikel Arteta denies Aaron Ramsdale exit rumours

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Arteta stated that he is very happy with Ramsdale’s presence within his squad.

“I want Aaron with us. I am very happy to have two very, very good goalkeepers and Aaron is staying with us,” he stated.

“He’s willing to play. Like any player, he wants to play for Arsenal. That’s what he wants to do.

“As well for England, it’s not like he has started a lot of games, so hopefully we can help him be better here so then he can play for England.

“We want to be better, so we want to add to what we already have. That’s the intention.”

What should Arsenal do with Aaron Ramsdale?

If Arsenal do lose Ramsdale midway through the season, they will need to find a new number two option.

Arteta has not had any stability when it comes to his goalkeeping options over the years, with the likes of Mat Ryan, Runar Alex Runarsson and Matt Turner all having short spells on the Arsenal bench.

Given that Ramsdale is an excellent goalkeeper, a 25-year-old international and that he signed a new contract in the summer, Arsenal should try to push for a huge fee if they do sell him.

If Arsenal choose to keep him at least until the end of the season, they risk lowering his transfer value as he will have limited opportunities to play, unless Arteta gives him a chance in the Champions League or FA Cup.

Arteta needs to be fair with Ramsdale though. If he is willing to give him opportunities to fight for his place, then he should keep him. If a big offer arrives and he will not gain a chance at Arsenal, then the manager should not stand in his way if he wants to leave.
