Not just Hincapie, Arsenal could sign another £8.6m defender before the transfer window closes

Arsenal’s summer transfer business isn’t quite over yet, despite spending over £250 million, as two defenders are on the radar.

So far, the Gunners have largely reinforced at the top end of the pitch, with Andrea Berta signing the likes of Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke.

There has been some movement in the backline, as Cristhian Mosquera joined from Valencia, but there is more business that could be done.

With that in mind, Arsenal are interested in signing Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen, as the star seems open to leaving in the final days of the window.

The Ecuadorian international would cover the left side of the defence, having featured as both a centre-back and left-back.

While there has been a lot said about Arsenal signing so many defenders, Hincapie may not be the only one on the radar as the window nears its close.

Arsenal want Arnau Martinez deal as well as Piero Hincapie transfer

Arsenal’s interest in Hincapie may help them cover the left side, potentially hinting at an exit for Jakub Kiwior, but there may still need to be some cover on the right.

With that in mind, the Gunners have been linked with a move for Girona star Arnau Martinez as an option to improve their depth at right-back and centre-back.

Ben Jacobs gave some more insight into the deal with the Highbury Squad, as he said: “I know they’ve looked at him [Arnau Martinez].

“It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that a right back or a right centre-back equally as versatile as Hincapie on the left-hand side could come in, but it’s not the priority at the moment.”

Previous reports from Santi Aouna claim that Arsenal had made a bid worth €10 million overall (£8.6 million).

While it would be yet another move to improve the options available to Mikel Arteta, it may be one that is already covered by the current options in the squad.

Arsenal’s defensive depth on the right side

While Martinez could be a useful option, the reality is that he isn’t one that should be a priority in the final days of the transfer market.

The Gunners already have plenty of options on the right side, not least following the signing of Mosquera.

While Martinez’s versatility certainly offers the type of profile Arteta loves in his backline, it wouldn’t make much sense for this window.

A sale in that defensive setup could change things, but it remains to be seen whether that is a possibility or not.
