Paul Merson has already explained why Mikel Arteta has to sign Darwin Nunez at Arsenal this week

With less than three days remaining in the transfer window, Arsenal have now been mooted as a shock destination for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

Rumours have emerged linking Nunez with a move to Arsenal, but given the hefty fee Liverpool spent on him two years ago, a move feels unlikely barring a major surprise.

The 25-year-old is a divisive figure at Anfield. Although he provided 19 goal and assist contributions in the Premier League last season, his consistency, as well as his finishing ability, have both been criticised.

Nevertheless, he does provide a level of speed, power and attacking chaos which is currently lacking in the Arsenal attacking roster, and if he is to make a shock move, Mikel Arteta could help get the best out of him.

Arsenal icon Paul Merson launched a defiant defence of Nunez when the Uruguayan was facing criticism, and this shows how he could be perfect for Arsenal.

Paul Merson praised shock Arsenal target Darwin Nunez

Speaking on Sky Sports in March, Merson highlighted how Nunez relentlessly attacks the box even when he misses chances, which is the sign of a top striker.

“He never hides. It’s the biggest compliment that I can give him,” Merson stated of Nunez.

“People miss chances and you see them not getting in the box. Even when he’s already hit the post three times, missed a penalty, he’s still getting in there for that header.

“He’s the one who’s bursting a gut to get in there. You hope it works for him. For me, he gets in my team every day of the week because he’s an absolute handful.

“He’s willing to run without the ball. He makes runs, he’s a team player.”

Darwin Nunez would be outstanding at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta

Nunez can play as a centre-forward, as well as a left-winger cutting inside onto his right foot. In terms of profile, he is the versatile, speedy attacker with goal threat that fans have been crying out for.

The Uruguayan’s ability to sniff out chances is incredible, but finishing is his weakness. However, with consistent game time and chances in a top team, this may be something he can develop over the years.

If he is to join, he would provide a profile that has been lacking in attack, and would make Arsenal’s front line a lot more unpredictable.

The question remains over whether Liverpool would sell, or Arsenal would be prepared to pay a huge fee for Nunez, and this seems unlikely so late in the window.
