Arsenal have been linked with a deadline-day move for Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling, as they aim to add a winger to their squad.

Sterling has been exiled from the Chelsea squad, and looks certain to leave before the transfer deadline at 11pm tonight.

If the 29-year-old remains at Chelsea, he will not be included in the squad, and manager Enzo Maresca has encouraged him to find a move.

Mikel Arteta wants to add a winger to his squad to bolster his front line, and finances aside, Sterling could be the perfect addition given his versatility and experience.

His wages could prove to be a problem, and Arsenal do not want to pay a transfer fee for Sterling. However, they may still be able to sign him.

Chelsea now open to a loan deal for Arsenal target Raheem Sterling

ESPN have now reported that Chelsea, who previously appeared adamant that Sterling would leave permanently, are now open to loaning Sterling out.

“Chelsea want to offload his £325,000-a-week wage and are thought to be open to a loan deal given Sterling has three years remaining on his contract,” ESPN have reported.

Arsenal are reportedly only willing to offer Sterling a £150k-per-week deal on a permanent contract, but if they can sign him on loan with no fee, then this could increase slightly to cover some of his wages.

However, it seems unlikely that Arsenal would be willing to take on his full salary, which would see him become the highest earner at the club.

Loan move for Raheem Sterling would be perfect for Arsenal

Sterling has failed to show the quality he displayed at Manchester City in his time at Chelsea, and given his age, a permanent deal represents something of a risk.

However, a loan move could be ideal for Arsenal. This would be a risk-free way of reuniting Sterling and Arteta, and if the deal does not work out, there would be no obligation to keep him.

If Sterling joins and performs well, then Arsenal can discuss a transfer later down the line, but they will be well aware of the risk of being stuck with an ageing high-earner.
