Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is keen to make a return to Serie A next season, despite recent links to Arsenal.

At the start of the month, Arsenal held talks with Tonali over a transfer; however, Andrea Berta found out that a deal was not possible so late in the window.

Arsenal could return for Tonali in the summer, but will likely face stiff competition from several clubs for his signature.

The Italian international looks intent on leaving St James’ Park next summer, and his next destination will be fascinating.

Arsenal target Sandro Tonali wants Serie A return

Sandro Tonali would be keen to make a return to Italy next summer, despite interest from the Premier League, according to Anil Kandola.

Arsenal, Man City and Man United are among the clubs queuing up to sign the 25-year-old, but they could all be set for disappointment.

United are the latest club to join the race for Tonali, and they could even offer him Champions League football, given their upturn in form.

Meanwhile, the Gunners would need to make a compelling case, as right now, it would be hard to see the Italian starting every week under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal need midfield depth, although they already have Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, who are going to be starting most matches.

The good news for Arsenal is that Andrea Berta has a good relationship with Tonali’s agents, which could place them in a strong position.

In terms of a return to Italy, that could be tricky as Newcastle value Tonali at over £80 million, and it’s hard to see a Serie A club affording such a fee.

Pep Guardiola praises ‘top player’ Sandro Tonali

Pep Guardiola praised Tonali following Manchester City’s win over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

“My Italian is perfect, so that’s why I can communicate with him. We also have an incredible friend in common from Brescia, Edoardo Piovani,” he said.

“Every time we are connected. I knew his father some time ago, and all the time we met we talked about his experience in Milan, the fans, and how happy he is in Newcastle.” “He’s a really, really top player, top player!”
