Arsenal are assessing the transfer market for a number nine.

Whilst Viktor Gyokeres had a good debut season, there is a feeling around Arsenal that they can upgrade on the Sweden international.

Brentford frontman Igor Thiago has recently been linked to the Emirates Stadium, and so too has Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi.

Mikel Arteta’s recruitment chiefs are also looking at a centre-forward overseas, and Sergio Aguero is a big fan of his.

Sergio Aguero loves Arsenal target Julian Alvarez

Arsenal are showing a strong interest in signing Julian Alvarez after his prolific season in Spain with Atletico Madrid.

Alvarez, who netted 20 goals whilst laying on nine assists last term, has recently been subjected to a £130m bid from Real Madrid.

That has been rejected, so it will require a club-record deal for Arsenal to land his signature.

Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero really rates the Gunners target and heaped praise on him last season.

“What Julian has achieved is astonishing,” Aguero explained.

“A player with the ability to move all over the pitch, he demonstrates an enormous level of sacrifice and talent.”

As Aguero noted, Alvarez is very versatile as he can operate as a number nine, a second striker and off either wing.

The 26-year-old has even operated as an attacking midfielder, so that ability is clearly very attractive to Arteta.

The Arsenal boss is ultimately in the hands of the ownership, who already shelled out £253m on transfer fees last summer.

It remains to be seen whether they’ll be willing to spend another hefty amount, so there’s certainly a long way to go for Alvarez to pop up in North London.
