Arsenal have finally completed the signing of Mikel Merino.

After a long-running transfer saga, Mikel Merino is now an Arsenal player.

Arsenal unveiled Merino yesterday, confirming his arrival from Real Sociedad, and accompanied the announcement with a video of the midfielder introducing himself to his new teammates.

Merino’s first words as an Arsenal player underlined his ambition to help the Gunners achieve their aims for this season.

His arrival will certainly strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad, as he will bring steel, physicality, aerial prowess, and additional depth to the middle of the park.

The North London club will be delighted to now have their man, even if it was a long time coming.

Why it took Arsenal so long to sign Mikel Merino

The Athletic recently reported the inside story of Arsenal’s move for Merino.

The Gunners have been keeping tabs on the 28-year-old for some time. Arteta has admired the midfielder for years, and considered a swoop for his services last summer, when Arsenal were looking to replace Granit Xhaka.

This year, though, the time was finally deemed right, and the club made their move. However, before shelling out up to £31.6 million for the Euro 2024 winner, the club’s hierarchy wanted to be sure of incoming funds to help cover the deal.

Arsenal’s talks for Merino gathered pace as it became clear that Eddie Nketiah would be on the move this summer.

Nketiah will soon join Crystal Palace, and the transfer fee Arsenal pocket from his sale will be offset against the costs of signing Merino.

Meanwhile, this move has been in Merino’s mind for some time too. He informed Real Sociedad of his desire to return to the Premier League – having previously enjoyed a loan stint with Newcastle United – back in 2023.

At that stage, the La Liga outfit knew that they would struggle to convince him to pen a new contract, but persisted with their efforts up until when Arsenal came knocking, at which point his future became clear.

What Merino’s arrival means for Kai Havertz and Ethan Nwaneri

Arteta had a clear plan for Kai Havertz when the Gunners prised him away from Chelsea last summer.

Arsenal intended to use Havertz in midfield, as the heir to Xhaka. However, the German struggled to adapt to his new role, and it became clear that he is more comfortable up front. He has since flourished as a striker for the Gunners.

The Gunners now see Merino as the solution to the problem that Havertz was initially expected to solve. It is also true that the pair share similar characteristics. They are both strong in the air and offer intelligent movement. Like Havertz, Merino is an expert duel winner.

His arrival also means that Declan Rice can be installed as the No. 6, protecting the back four, as was the original plan for the former West Ham United man.

Last season, Rice was dragged up the pitch into a more advanced role as a consequence of Havertz being pushed forward to lead the line.

On top of all that, as per the aforementioned report, the signing of Merino and his age profile means that he will be around and in his peak years just long enough for Ethan Nwaneri to develop into his successor.
