It’s going to be a quiet deadline for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal it seems and the Gunners even look like missing out on a young talent as well.

The Gunners had been expected to be quiet all January but recent injuries to both Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka made things more interesting.

Furthermore, Arsenal’s reported interest in Sandro Tonali set tongues wagging this morning.

That deal now seems to be one for down the road – if at all – and it seems that Arsenal are now also going to miss out on another signing. This time, to London rivals, Tottenham.

Tottenham to beat Arsenal to signing of James Wilson

Earlier on deadline day, it was suggested Wilson would sign for Arsenal and go into the development squad as a player for the future.

However, it now seems Arsenal back away from a deal and he will sign for Tottenham instead.

Journalist Sami Mokbel has confirmed the story, while speaking on a transfer special podcast for The Athletic, David Ornstein confirmed that Wilson may not be at the level needed for Arsenal.

“People have told me today that he’s not at the level required or profile to be an Arsenal player, but that isn’t to say that he can’t come in to help them out and then be sold on,” Ornstein said.

With Arsenal now unlikely to get Tonali and Wilson off to Spurs, the work for January might be over and done with.

Yes, the loss of Mikel Merino is a big one and if Bukayo Saka is out, it will be an even bigger loss.
