Arsenal fended off a number of clubs to secure their eight new summer signings.

Eberechi Eze was almost a done deal to North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur before a phone call with Mikel Arteta sealed the deal for the Gunners.

Manchester United were interested in Viktor Gyokeres but the Swede had only eyes for North London following several conversations with Andrea Berta.

Whilst there were no signs that Manchester City were in for any Arsenal targets this summer, Troy Deeney believes Pep Guardiola may have some regrets over not rivalling the Gunners for one of their new stars.

Troy Deeney thinks Manchester City should have signed Cristhian Mosquera

Speaking on the latest episode of ‘The Football Exchange’ podcast, Deeney has expressed his belief that Manchester City should have signed Cristhian Mosquera this summer ahead of the Gunners.

City have endured a tough start to their campaign with two defeats from their opening three games against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton.

Guardiola’s side have looked vulnerable defensively and Deeney believes Mosquera would have added competition to the likes of John Stones and Ruben Dias.

Deeney stated: “Maybe one of the guys that Arsenal signed at centre-back. Who’s the guy who came in ? Mosquera?

“Maybe him because like John Stones and Dias have been great, but they look now like they’ve lost like a yard on their step, like they’re scared to sprint before they get injured.”

Arsenal fans labelled Mosquera as ‘unbelievable’ after he replaced William Saliba in the early stages of the defeat against Liverpool.

The Spanish defender is now likely to have a run in the side and the chance to further impress his new supporters and manager.

Mikel Arteta was impressed with Cristhian Mosquera’s display against Liverpool

Mosquera has been hailed as the ‘bargain’ of the summer and proved that he is more than capable of stepping into Saliba’s shoes.

Arteta was full of praise for the 21-year-old during his post-match press conference following the game at Anfield.

Whilst giving an update on Saliba’s fitness, Arteta stated: “He twisted his ankle during the warm-up, and he came in and he said he believed that he could carry on and play, but straight away in the first two actions.

“I could see that he couldn’t cope, and we had to get him out unfortunately. But thank God we had Mosquera, which we put in for the first time in the Premier League. His debut, not expecting it at Anfield, and I think he was really, really good.”

Mosquera is likely to partner Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence for the Gunners’ next Premier League clash at home to Nottingham Forest.
