Victor Osimhen to Arsenal update amid Chelsea transfer race reports

Arsenal have been in the market for a new striker this summer.

Mikel Arteta has explored numerous potential options to bolster Arsenal’s strikeforce.

Benjamin Sesko turned down a move to Arsenal, The Gunners have also been linked with the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Dominic Solanke, and Ivan Toney, amongst others.

However, as things stand, the North London club have failed to recruit a new attacker. What’s more, Eddie Nketiah is expected to leave Arsenal. The Hale End academy graduate’s departure, whilst he clearly isn’t a key figure in the manager’s plans, would leave the Gunners even lighter on options at the top of the pitch.

Arsenal have been linked with Victor Osimhen this summer, too. The Nigerian striker is known to want to leave Napoli, and would represent an exciting addition to Arteta’s squad. However, he wouldn’t come cheap, and the Gunners are not alone in having shown an interest in securing his services.

Fabrizio Romano provides Arsenal fans with Victor Osimhen update

As far as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is concerned, Chelsea are currently leading the race to sign Osimhen.

As quoted by Caught Offside, the reporter said: “On Chelsea, there is still no major update or change to the Victor Osimhen situation. They never left the race, but Osimhen still insists on a permanent transfer and he won’t lower his salary demands.

“I’m also not aware of any negotiation ongoing right now with other clubs, despite some reports in Italy mentioning Arsenal.”

It would seem, then, that Arsenal have stepped away from the situation. Certainly, it would seem that sporting director Edu’s primary focus at this time is on securing a deal for Mikel Merino.

Arsenal haven’t matched Merino’s asking price yet, but Arteta is keen on the Real Sociedad midfielder.

Do Arsenal need a striker?

Arteta already has Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus vying to lead the line at the Emirates Stadium.

Jesus proved a point in pre-season, and looks sharp and full of confidence ahead of the new campaign. If he can stay fit and get back to his best, then the Brazilian could be a star for the North London outfit. However, his injury record does provide a cause for concern.

Meanwhile, Havertz may end up being required in a midfield role. Due to these factors, Arsenal could struggle to manage their hectic campaign without another attacker in their ranks available to provide his share of goal contributions.
