What Julian Alvarez privately thinks about Premier League return with Arsenal and Liverpool transfer links

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez in recent days.

The Gunners are looking to add an injection of firepower to their forward line this summer, after scoring 22 goals fewer in the 2024/25 Premier League season than they did in the previous campaign.

Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko have emerged as Arsenal’s primary targets, although Andrea Berta is exploring several different options on the market.

Berta is interested in signing Alvarez, who he acquired for Atletico 12 months ago, with a potential deal rumoured to be doable at around £81 million.

Alvarez left Manchester City last summer for £80 million and enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Spanish capital.

Netting 29 goals and providing seven assists in 54 appearances for the Madrid outfit across all competitions, the Argentine would certainly be an excellent acquisition for the Gunners.

However, journalist Charles Watts doesn’t believe the deal is likely to materialise.

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Watts revealed that Alvarez, who has also been linked with Liverpool, is ‘very happy’ in Spain and isn’t pining for a return to the Premier League.

The versatile forward is playing in a system that is well suited to his playing style under Diego Simeone, and is thriving in La Liga and in the Champions League.

He has little reason to agitate for a move, and that would likely need to happen for Arsenal to secure him this summer.

Atletico have no reason to sell their talisman, and thus would demand a substantial profit on the £80 million they paid for Alvarez last summer if Arsenal’s interest is serious.

Arsenal shouldn’t waste their time trying to sign Julian Alvarez

Arsenal need to get their business done early this summer and ensure their squad is in place ahead of pre-season.

While Alvarez would be a dream signing for the Gunners, it’s very unlikely to come to fruition, and Berta should subsequently not waste his time trying to make it happen.

Instead, the Italian should focus on more plausible targets and try to get them over the line as soon as possible.

Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly available for less than £50 million and is understood to be keen on a move to the Emirates.

Thus, adding the Swede, who has an outstanding goal-scoring pedigree, to Mikel Arteta’s squad shouldn’t be a difficult or lengthy task.

It’s imperative that Arsenal move more efficiently this summer than they did last year, when they left business late and this disrupted Arteta’s team’s start to the season.
