Nico Williams has been a target for Arsenal for over a year.
The Spain international is one of the most exciting wide players in world football, and he would be a fantastic signing for most clubs.
Arsenal need a new winger this summer, and they have been linked with plenty of names over the last few months.
However, Mikel Arteta’s top target out wide has always been Williams, but the Arsenal manager has just received bad news on that front.
Fabrizio Romano says Nico Williams has ‘informed’ Arsenal about his transfer stance
The Nico Williams saga was a long one in last summer’s transfer window.
After his brilliance at Euro 2024, many clubs wanted to sign the talented Spanish speedster, and it looked like he would be on the move.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona were all waiting to sign Williams, but he decided to stay at Athletic Club in Bilbao instead.
There were fears of a similar saga this time around as well, but Fabrizio Romano has revealed now that Williams has made his decision.
The winger wants to join Barcelona, and he has ‘informed’ Arsenal and Bayern Munich that his decision will not change as long as the Catalans are pursuing him.
Romano said in a video on his YouTube channel: “I’m hearing that Nico Williams informed all the other clubs, Bayern more than anyone, and then also Arsenal, that he is giving priority to Barcelona.
“He is not rejecting the other clubs, but giving priority to Barca. Until Barca are in the race, until Barca are considering his signing, Nico is waiting for Barcelona. He is waiting for Barcelona to make a move.”
What should Arsenal do after Nico Williams’ transfer decision?
It is a real shame that Williams favours a move to Barcelona.
Lamine Yamal hinted that Williams could join him at the Camp Nou, but there was still some hope that Arsenal could land him.
However, now that he has made it clear that his preference is Barcelona, Arsenal should end their interest in the Spaniard and look elsewhere.
Jamie Gittens could still be an option for Arsenal, while AC Milan and Portugal star Rafael Leao could be available in a potential swap deal in the coming weeks.
It remains to be seen which winger Berta will go for.
