Multiple reports revealed today that David Luiz has informed Arsenal that he will leave the club as a free agent next month. (Read more)
The Brazilian has been one of Arsenal’s most important players since he joined us. He has made his fair share of mistakes, but his experience and leadership at the back was a huge asset, and we will have to replace that.
Arsenal will not be short of centre-halves next season but we will lack the leadership that is so important. As a result, we expect Mikel Arteta to consider a move for a top-quality central defender to replace Luiz this summer.
Here are three players he should consider…
The Dane has had a fantastic season on loan in the Premier League with Fulham. The Lilywhites unfortunately went down, but Andersen was undoubtedly their standout player, and he is on the radar of multiple clubs.
Sky Sports revealed today that our next-door neighbours Tottenham are keen to complete a £20 million move for him. If Arteta really wants to bring in a quality player who knows the Premier League, Andersen would be an excellent choice.
Negotiations with Lyon will not be easy, but there is the added incentive of getting one over Tottenham. That could motivate Edu to try just a little bit harder.
If Arteta needs a leader to replace David Luiz, there aren’t many better than Romagnoli. The Italian has been AC Milan’s captain since he was 23, and he is one of the best defenders the Serie A has seen in a while.
The 26-year-old will enter the final year of his contract this summer and there is no agreement over an extension. CalcioMercato revealed a few weeks ago that Milan would be open to selling him under the right conditions, and he will not be short of offers.
If Arsenal need a top-quality defender who is also a real leader, Arteta should go all out to sign Romagnoli this summer.
Arguably the most difficult deal to complete on the list, White has been a star in the Premier League for Brighton this season.
Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund are all big admirers of him, and so are Arsenal who are reportedly keen to sign him. (Read here)
The 23-year-old will reportedly be available for £35 million this summer. That is a lot of money, but if Arteta wants quality, we will have to open our wallets, much more than we have on defenders over the years.
