Feyenoord boss Arne Slot has delivered his honest verdict on Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson after working with him for the last few months.
The young winger has always been highly rated at Arsenal. He is a fantastic talent, we all know that, but he just hasn’t been able to nail down a regular spot in the side at the Emirates.
As a result, Arsenal sent him out on loan to Feyenoord in Holland last summer, but he hasn’t quite set the Eredivisie on fire just yet.
Feyenoord boss: Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson is not a goalscorer
Speaking about Nelson’s struggles in attack so far this season, Slot said, as quoted by FR12: “The talent is there, but what Reiss still struggles with is creating big chances for himself or his teammates. You see a lot of skill, speed and agility, but the final push is still missing.
“Then it’s just not a finish or just not an assist. The most difficult thing in football is to get the best out of your play. And if you play for Feyenoord, where you often end up in a promising position as a winger, you expect a higher yield.
“I don’t think he is much of a goal scorer anyway. I don’t see him doing that much in training either, but at Hoffenheim, in the Bundesliga, he scored seven goals. That’s excellent.
“I think Reiss is much more of a preparer than a finisher, and I’m convinced he’ll show he can do better.”
The Insider’s View:
Time is running out for Nelson to prove his worth at the top level.
The 22-year-old is rapid, extremely skilful and has the potential to be a really dangerous player. However, just a goal and an assist in 17 appearances for Feyenoord this season is not a great return at all.
In Nelson’s defence, he has only started four games. However, the fact that his manager has now come out and said that he’s not a goalscorer is not a good sign at all.
The winger will have just a year left on his contract when he returns to Arsenal in the summer. If he doesn’t make a big impact in the next few months, we’ll have no choice but to sell him, which would be a real shame as we all know how good a player he can be.
