Aaron Ramsdale’s Arsenal career came to an end in the summer transfer window.
The Englishman joined the Gunners in 2021 from Sheffield United. There was a lot of negativity around the decision to sign him back then, but he quickly became a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium.
However, in September 2023, Ramsdale lost his place in Arsenal’s side and was then sold by Mikel Arteta on transfer deadline day this summer.
Ramsdale has now shared some insight on his exit ahead of his return to the Emirates Stadium with Southampton.
Aaron Ramsdale says David Raya was the first player to text him after Arsenal exit
Ramsdale started the 2023/24 season as Arsenal’s number one.
The England international had an amazing previous campaign and even made it into the PFA Team of the Season. He was so good and nobody thought he could be displaced.
However, after just three Premier League games last season, Arteta decided that Raya was his number one, and Ramsdale had no way back in.
That must have been heartbreaking for him as he hadn’t done too much wrong when he lost his place. Raya was viewed as more reliable and he has proven that.
Arsenal sold Ramsdale to Southampton in the summer, and the goalkeeper has now revealed that the first player to send him a message was Raya.
That is a bit of a surprise as you would expect one of Ramsdale’s English mates to text him much before the guy who cost him his place in the side.
Ramsdale told the BBC: “I tried my hardest to dislodge David out of the team. I do think now the rewards are showing. He has started the season incredibly well.
“He was actually the first person to text after my move here from the boys at Arsenal. He was great. He was top. And, like I said, he has made some big, big saves this season and kept him in some games.
“I’m just desperate he doesn’t have one of them games on Saturday.”

One thing made Ramsdale really angry when he was on the Arsenal bench
Ramsdale would’ve definitely been upset when he lost his place to Raya in September last year.
Every Arsenal fan knows that the Englishman is a world-class goalkeeper on his day, and he produced several outstanding performances for the Gunners.
Despite that, he was dropped, and it must have been really frustrating to sit on the bench. However, there’s one thing that annoyed him even more.
Ramsdale revealed that he was really angry when the cameras panned to him on the bench every time Raya made a good save or a mistake.
He didn’t like that one bit, but it’s good to see that it didn’t affect his relationship with Raya. The Spaniard being the first one to message him after his departure is a really classy move as well.
