Arsenal have begun their mid-season break in Dubai hoping to put some energy back into the legs after their demoralising defeat against Newcastle United.

Ben White has returned to Arsenal first team training in a huge fitness boost for Mikel Arteta with Bukayo Saka also making the trip.

Gabriel Martinelli will undergo a scan on a hamstring injury sustained in the Carabao Cup defeat but has also travelled for the break in the sun.

Arsenal found their last trip to be a huge boost as they won 16 out of their last 18 games and on their first day of this season’s trip, have bumped into an old face.

Arsenal fans react to Manuel Almunia meeting goalkeeper David Raya in Dubai

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has been seen with the Arsenal squad in Dubai and has met with fellow goalkeeper David Raya.

Arsenal fans have taken to X to react to the news of the two Spanish goalkeepers meeting on the mid-season break.

One Arsenal fan wrote: “Get Almunia away from David Raya, we don’t want him rubbing off on our goalkeeper.”

Another Arsenal fan wrote: “Stay away from him Raya you don’t want his sort of problems in an Arsenal shirt.”

The sense of nervousness from the Arsenal fanbase was clear to see, one fan wrote: “The worst keeper of the Emirates era.”

AWhilst another fan also stated: “A minute silence for all of us that went through the Manuel Almunia Arsenal goalkeeper era.”

Manuel Almunia endured an indifferent time at Arsenal

Almunia made his debut for Arsenal in 2004, primarily as Jens Lehmann’s understudy to begin with before going on to become Arsenal’s number one.

The Spaniard won the FA Cup in 2005 and made 175 appearances over the course of a seven year spell at the club but was a player that could go from the sublime to the ridiculous in a matter of moments.

Almunia famously replaced Lehmann in the 2006 Champions League final after the German was sent off and was beaten twice at his near post as Barcelona came from behind to win 2-1.

It was perhaps the most heart-breaking evening in the club’s history and to this day is still the closest the Gunners have ever come to lifting club football’s most prestigious prize. Manuel Almunia will always be remembered by Arsenal fans for his part that night.
