Arsenal supporters have called for Arsene Wenger to make a return to the club in a brand new role almost six years after leaving.

The legendary manager spent 22 years with the Gunners, watching the side grow into Premier League title winners on more than one occasion.

Some of the greatest moments of the modern era came under Wenger, who moved on in 2018 after an impressive spell.

Since then, a step back into management hasn’t been on the cards as he looks to help FIFA develop the global game.

However, despite that role, Arsenal fans have all called for the former manager to return to the Emirates Stadium with a new job title.

Arsene Wenger backed to replace Edu Gaspar as Arsenal director of football

News broke that Edu Gaspar is set to leave Arsenal as the director of football, which caused shockwaves amongst those at the club.

The Brazilian is responsible for bringing the Gunners back to the top with his handling of transfers and contracts.

With the squad in a decent place, Mikel Arteta has been able to take the side towards the top end of the Premier League and the latter rounds of the Champions League.

However, the upcoming exit for Edu leaves plenty of questions over who will take over his position as the director of football.

Some Arsenal fans believe that former boss Wenger should take the position, bringing his expertise to the forefront of the Gunners and their transfer business.

“Would love to see Arsene Wenger to become Sporting Director of Arsenal,” one supporter said on social media. Another added: “Arsenal should bring Arsene Wenger back to the club to replace Edu.”

Another fan appeared to joke: “Arsene Wenger who says no.” though others continued with: “Time to bring Arsene Wenger back as director of football/consigliere.” and “Arsene Wenger it is time to come home.”

It’s a clear demand from some fans that they wish to see the French icon back working for the club again and restoring them to the glory days.

Whether that would be possible is another story altogether, given the size of the task at hand and the current job at FIFA that Wenger holds.

Would Arsene Wenger work as Arsenal director of football?

Putting aside the barriers that could stop Wenger from rejoining Arsenal, there are questions over whether the appointment would work anyway.

The 75-year-old had a clear eye for talent in his early days with the Gunners, landing some big names across the world to play for the club.

In the years that proceeded though, it was clear that the squad had been in decline and unable to compete at the top level.

While this was done without a director of football, it was clear that Wenger had an influence on the big transfer decisions.

Granted, plenty of his latter years at the Emirates Stadium came with a shrewd budget and little to spend compared to Arsenal’s rivals.

So perhaps with the squad in a much better place and with some more spending power at the top, Wenger could add even more firepower.
