Arteta and Edu now told they are to blame if Arsenal problem leads to failure

Arsenal have suffered a poor run of results in recent weeks, and their current inability to spend in the transfer window has raised serious questions about their summer transfer business.

Arsenal spent heavily after finishing second and returning to the Champions League, with an outlay of over £200m on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya.

Whilst Timber has been injured and Rice has been exceptional, Havertz and Raya have both come in for heavy criticism. Havertz in particular, has been labelled a waste of money, given that the heavy fee spent on him could have been used for a striker which Arsenal needed.

Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar led the recruitment drive in the summer window, and they will have to take the blame if Arsenal cannot address their poor form to compete in the second half of the season.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Charles Watts claimed that Arteta and Edu need to take the brunt of the blame if Arsenal’s season falls apart as a result of their transfer business.

“I go back to the work that they did in summer, what’s making it [signing a striker in January] unrealistic now, is because of the finances that were spent in the summer on other areas of the pitch,” Watts stated.

“Ultimately that is on Mikel Arteta and that is on Edu, so if this season ends up unravelling because of that, and Arsenal don’t score enough goals because of that, and they don’t have the resources now to do something about it in January because of that, it’s on them.

“That’s why questions are going to be asked, and that’s football, that’s the way it works, you live and die by your decisions, and right now the decisions Arsenal have taken in the summer are stopping them potentially doing what I think we all know now what they need to do this month, and that’s a worry.”

Did Arteta and Edu get it wrong in the summer transfer window?

Right now, the decision to spend a huge sum on Havertz looks to have been a poor one.

Both his transfer fee, and high salary, could have landed a top-class central midfielder to replace Granit Xhaka, or a top-class striker who could contribute significant goalscoring ability.

Havertz has disappointed in midfield, as his inability to progress the ball is now harming the team, and having played upfront against Liverpool on Sunday, his poor finishing meant Arsenal could not take the lead as they eventually fell to a defeat.

The decision to sign a player who was in a complete confidence crisis at Chelsea was one which Arteta and Edu have to take the blame for. They had the resources to land a striker, which Arsenal desperately need right now, and they are now unable to spend in January as a result of the huge outlay on a player who so far, does not look right for the team.
