Eric Dier claims Arsenal once had a seriously underrated player who’s the strongest he ever faced

Arsenal fans will feel that they should have had more Premier League titles under their belt over the years.

The Gunners are chasing their first league title since 2004 and Mikel Arteta will be boosted in that pursuit by the fact that Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

Arteta’s side have come close in recent years with three consecutive runners-up spots, however, Arsene Wenger also built some magnificent teams in the 2010s era.

Players such as Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil were deserving of more silverware, however, former Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has claimed another Arsenal star of that era was the strongest opponent he has ever faced.

Eric Dier names former Arsenal star Olivier Giroud as the strongest opponent he ever faced

Dier had many battles in the North London Derby during his time with Spurs and has singled out Olivier Giroud as the ‘strongest’ opponent he ever faced.

Gary Neville praised Giroud last season by claiming that the striker was exactly what Arteta’s current side were missing in their pursuit of the Premier League.

The former Spurs defender was on the same page as he claimed the French international was ‘underrated’ throughout his career.

Dier stated: “Strongest player I’ve played against? You know, I’m playing against him in a couple of weeks, Olivier Giroud.

“I think one of the most underrated strikers during his time in the Premier League.”

Giroud recently opened his account for his new club Lille in Ligue 1 at the ripe old age of 38, however, he is still a reliable focal point for his side.

In 253 matches for the Gunners, the striker scored 105 goals and produced 37 assists as he often goes under the radar as to just how clinical he was during his time in North London.

Viktor Gyokeres can be Arsenal’s new version of Olivier Giroud

The biggest compliment one can give Giroud from his time at the club is that he made his teammates play better around him.

He was often a powerful figure to bounce passes from or to find with a penetrating cross – Giroud made the dart across the front post his trademark movement and finish.

Viktor Gyokeres has been brought to the club this summer to do exactly the same job for Arteta’s current side.

If the Swede can produce over 100 goals for the club, he will go a long way to ending that 21-year wait for a Premier League title.
