Arsenal have seen their goalkeeper ranks change plenty under the stewardship of Mikel Arteta over the years.
When the Spaniard arrived, the Gunners had the reliable Bernd Leno between the sticks, but things have moved on a lot since then.
Several goalkeepers have taken the number one shirt at Arsenal, or have at least attempted to, with Mikel Arteta keen to have strength in depth there.
Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to become the latest Arsenal goalkeeper signing, joining from Chelsea for a fee worth £5 million.
He will become the seventh goalkeeper signed by the Arsenal boss, who has a track record when it comes to landing shot-stoppers.
So, with that said, here’s a look at every goalkeeper signed by Arteta at Arsenal.

Runar Alex Runarsson
Viewed as a potential bright prospect at Dijon, Arsenal paid roughly £1 million to sign Runar Alex Runarsson in 2020.
The Icelandic shot-stopper didn’t get many opportunities to impress, and when he did, he eventually struggled.
Runarsson was rated among Arteta’s worst signings at Arsenal, making just six appearances for the club before leaving to join Copenhagen in 2024.
Mat Ryan
In the January 2021 transfer window, Arsenal looked to strengthen the depth available in their goalkeeping department by signing Mat Ryan on loan from Brighton.
The experienced Australian international made just three appearances for Arsenal before making his return to the Seagulls.
Aaron Ramsdale
While Arsenal largely signed depth options for the goalkeeping ranks at this point, Arteta took a leap of faith to sign Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United in 2021.
The new signing quickly dislodged Bernd Leno from his position in the team, making him the new number one.
Ramsdale spent three years at the Emirates Stadium before eventually moving on to join Southampton in 2024.
| Appearances | Goals conceded | Clean sheets |
|---|---|---|
| 89 | 99 | 32 |

Matt Turner
With Leno’s eventual exit, Arsenal needed another number two to play when called upon, eventually going into the market to sign Matt Turner.
The Gunners signed the USMNT international from New England in 2022, where he went on to make seven appearances.
Turner eventually left Arsenal in 2023 for more game time, joining Nottingham Forest.
David Raya
Arteta made something of a statement in 2023 when he went out and signed David Raya on an initial loan with an option to make the deal permanent.
The Spaniard quickly dislodged Ramsdale, causing plenty of discussion points surrounding the deal and some question marks over the move.
With Raya established as a top option between the sticks, it’s a move that has been justified.

Neto
Arsenal signed Neto on loan from Bournemouth in 2024, with the goalkeeper brought in as a late option to provide cover.
The Gunners were looking to bring in some help after Ramsdale’s exit, with the Brazilian going on to make just one appearance for the club.
