Arsenal have been dealt a bit of a blow in their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi.
The Gunners are expected to make at least one big signing in the middle of their park, as both Thomas Partey and Jorginho could leave the Emirates.
Zubimendi is the man Mikel Arteta wants and a lot of work has already gone into trying to secure a deal for the Spain international.
But, COPE in Spain have revealed that Zubimendi is now edging ‘closer and closer’ to signing for Real Madrid this summer.
If that is true, Arsenal will have to turn their attention elsewhere, and fans of the Emirates Stadium club have a suggestion for Arteta.

Many Arsenal fans have not been convinced by Zubimendi for a while now.
Several top clubs are after the Spanish midfielder, so it is clear that he is a phenomenal player. But Gooners have always been skeptical about seeing him in their side.
Now that reports have claimed that Zubimendi is closing in on a move to Real Madrid, many Arsenal fans have taken to social media to suggest another player for Arteta – Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton.
One Arsenal fan tweeted: “Adam Wharton way more dynamic midfielder, more creative, more physical with greater capacity than Zubimendi. Wharton is so technically gifted, great passing ability, comfortable passing with either foot.”
Another said: “Adam Wharton. I have always preferred him to Zubimendi. He can play 8 or 6, is younger and has a higher ceiling.”
“Wharton instead of Zubimendi,” said another.
Another Gooner said: “Wharton would be unreal. Xabi Alonso regen. I’d prefer him over Zubimendi.”
“Zubimendi can go to Madrid. Bring me Adam Wharton,” tweeted another.

Declan Rice is Arsenal’s best midfielder right now.
Yes, Partey is magnificent and Martin Odegaard is a joy to watch on his day, but neither have been as consistent as Rice since he joined the club.
The Englishman will remain the first name on the team sheet in Arsenal’s midfield next season, and what he has previously said about Wharton should convince Arteta to sign him.
Rice said about Wharton in 2024: “He’s been outstanding!
“He’s so composed and calm on the ball. He played his first half of the season in the Championship, he’s [come into the England team] from Crystal Palace now.
“He’s got a beautiful left foot, really crisp passing. And all round, just a really down-to-earth boy who wants to learn.”
Crystal Palace have slapped a £70 million price tag on Wharton. It remains to be seen of that figure is something Arsenal would consider.
