Alexis Sanchez was a divisive character throughout his time at Arsenal.

The winger was undoubtedly a brilliant player who carried a mediocre Gunners through some difficult seasons, but his personality tended to rub fans up the wrong way from time-to-time.

Throwing tantrums on the pitch and eventually departing for Manchester United, the Chilean left a slightly dented legacy at the Emirates.

Nevertheless, Sanchez arguably makes Arsenal’s best eleven since they moved to their new home, with his outstanding talent not going unnoticed by his teammates.

Rob Holding revealed what Alexis Sanchez did in training at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger had a very talented squad at his disposal late in his Arsenal career, with Sanchez and Mesut Ozil arguably the pick of the bunch.

Wenger reportedly had a ‘love-hate relationship’ with Sanchez, with the winger’s relentless hard work but occasional petulance certainly making him a difficult player to manage.

The wide forward’s work rate was one of the key features of his game, and it appears this dedication extended into what he did on the training ground.

Speaking in an interview with Soccer AM in 2017, former Arsenal defender Rob Holding revealed that Sanchez would randomly start doing push-ups during breaks in training.

Asked who the best player in Wenger’s squad was at the time, Holding responded: “Alexis Sanchez. I’d say he’s the best. I know a lot of the other lads say Santi, but I’d say Alexis.

“He’ll drop down and just start doing press-ups [in training], which I’ll find the weirdest.

“I’m marking him, there’s a pause in play and there’s a bit of tactics going on or whatever, he’ll just drop down and start doing press-ups, and it’s just like, ‘we’ve got gym after training, wait until then.’”

Contributing to 45 goals in 51 appearances in the 2016/17 season, Sanchez produced arguably the greatest individual campaign from an Arsenal player in the Emirates era.

His ability to conjure up moments of magic, whether through an exceptional piece of skill, a delicate pass or an emphatic finish, made him an exhilarating player to watch.

An eccentric character no doubt, but an incredible footballer.
