Ian Wright says ‘really strange’ thing one Arsenal star does makes him so ‘happy’

Legendary former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has now opened up about one thing that he loves to see Ben White doing on the pitch. 

Ben White had a night to remember as Arsenal demolished Sheffield United on Monday evening.

The right-back popped up with a rare goal to round-off the scoring in the second-half. It was an excellent finish from the defender, as the ball was laid off to him by Kai Havertz, White was able to swivel and lash it into the far corner of the net with his weaker left foot. The Blades goalkeeper got a hand to the shot, but it was too powerful and nestled into the bottom corner all the same.

The goal marked White’s second of the season, and just the fourth that the player has ever scored for Arsenal across 120 appearances, in all competitions, following his arrival at the Emirates Stadium in the summer 2021.

Mikel Arteta will have been pleased to see the 26-year-old getting into such an advanced position at Bramall Lane, and White demonstrated that his instincts for finding the back of the net aren’t so bad at all. Perhaps there will now be an expectation on him to chip in with goals a little more regularly in future. 

Ben White further underlines importance to Arsenal

Certainly, if there is now a tactical adjustment for the full-back to add into his game, he has already proven that he can adapt to such instructions. In recent weeks, in the absence of Oleksandr Zinchenko and whilst Jakub Kiwior has been flourishing on the opposite flank in a more orthodox left-back role, White has been tasked with adopting an inverted approach to playing right-back. 

The four-cap England international has excelled under these new instructions, demonstrating that he can come into the middle of the park and provide worthy additional support to the midfield unit, whilst also still managing to provide plenty of assistance to Bukayo Saka on the right wing.

White has a humble streak and has downplayed his quality and importance to Arsenal before. In truth, though, he is perhaps one of the most underrated and under-appreciated players in the top flight of English football. His consistency, versatility, and ability to play through injury all make White a massively useful player for Arteta to have at his disposal. 

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is certainly a huge fan of White, and enjoyed seeing him score at Bramall Lane. Speaking on his Wrighty’s House podcast, he said, “the goal I enjoyed most…was Ben White’s goal. Ben White’s, like, cavalier. Getting forward the way he gets forward, Ben White. And it’s really strange, because even just seeing Ben White’s smile makes me happy, because he just looks like such a serious, deep kind of dude.”
