Leandro Trossard says Edu’s £27m signing is actually Arsenal’s unsung hero this season

Arsenal have had a number of standout performers during their Premier League-winning campaign.

Declan Rice has been unbelievable in midfield, while William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have once again formed the best centre-back partnership in England.

Several other players have received huge praise too, and rightly so, because this title win has been a proper collective effort.

However, Leandro Trossard believes one Arsenal player still deserves even more appreciation than he has received – David Raya.

Leandro Trossard says David Raya has been Arsenal’s unsung hero this season

When Arsenal signed Raya from Brentford, there was enormous controversy surrounding the decision.

Mikel Arteta’s choice to replace Aaron Ramsdale as the club’s number one goalkeeper divided opinion massively and created one of the biggest talking points in English football.

Fast forward to now, and Raya, who Edu signed permanently for £27 million in 2024, has completely justified the manager’s faith in him.

The Spaniard has been one of the best goalkeepers in Europe this season and has played a huge role in Arsenal winning the Premier League title.

Whether it has been his shot-stopping, command of the box or composure in possession, Raya has consistently delivered in big moments.

He has also kept an incredible number of clean sheets and secured the Golden Glove once again.

Several Arsenal players and pundits have praised him throughout the season, but Trossard still believes he deserves even more credit.

When asked to name Arsenal’s unsung hero of the campaign, the Belgian replied to the club’s media team: “Unsung? I think David (Raya) needs a lot of credit!”

David Raya is not Arsenal’s unsung hero – Martin Zubimendi is

As brilliant as Raya has been this season, calling him Arsenal’s unsung hero does not feel entirely accurate. The Spaniard has received praise from almost everybody in football over the last few months.

Thierry Henry even nominated Raya for Player of the Year, which shows just how highly he is now rated. That means the goalkeeper’s praises are definitely being sung.

If anybody deserves the title of Arsenal’s true unsung hero, it is probably summer signing Martin Zubimendi.

In recent months, the Spaniard has received far more criticism than praise because of a dip in form. However, people seem to have forgotten just how unbelievable he was during the first half of the season.

Zubimendi controlled games, dictated Arsenal’s tempo and was genuinely one of the best midfielders in the world for long stretches of the campaign.

Without him, Arsenal probably would not have built the platform that eventually led them to the Premier League title.
