Arsenal and Manchester United have had some almighty clashes over the years, with a rivalry that has become a staple of Premier League culture.
Within those matches have been some battles between players, the likes of which haven’t been seen elsewhere.
One player who was a thorn in the side of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger was Man United star Paul Scholes.
The midfielder was at the heart of everything good for the Red Devils, often dictating possession with a long passing range from the base of his team’s spine.
While those days are now over, Scholes has since reflected on the Arsenal legend he believes is the best in the club’s history.

Paul Scholes names Thierry Henry as Arsenal’s best player ever
There have been plenty of debates over the years about Arsenal’s best-ever players, with plenty of legends to wear the famous red shirt.
Some stars have captained the side to glory, with Arsenal’s trophy history being among the most celebrated in history.
For Paul Scholes, though, the answer is relatively simple.
When asked who the best Arsenal player ever is on TNT Sports’ TikTok page, he didn’t hesitate before naming Thierry Henry.
Henry is widely regarded as one of the greatest to have graced the pitch for Arsenal, showing his deadly streak in front of goal.
Opposition often cite him as the scariest player they have faced, while the Frenchman himself has also had plenty of praise for Scholes in the past.

Thierry Henry named Paul Scholes as the greatest in the Premier League
While Scholes named Henry as the best to play for Arsenal, the Frenchman has already named the former Man United star as the greatest to feature in the Premier League as a whole.
Speaking on Sky News in early 2025, he revealed: “I would have to go Paul Scholes.
“I don’t think people have given him the credit he deserves. One of the best, if not the best, I’ve played against, he could do anything.
“Unfortunately for him, when he was playing for the national team, for England, sometimes people didn’t see it like that.
“If I had a Paul Scholes in my team, everything would be around him.
“At Manchester United, they saw it like that, but I think Paul Scholes is one of the best I’ve played against in this league, and seen anywhere.”
Henry faced Scholes the second-most of any player in his career, joint-second with Frank Lampard and only one game behind Mikael Silvestre.
| Matches | Henry wins | Draw | Scholes wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 | 6 | 5 | 8 |
Scholes has the better record out of the two, but it is close and shows how many intense battles have been had in the Arsenal and Manchester United rivalry that became so famous.
