Premier League legends Ian Wright and Alan Shearer are still debating a controversial incident from the recent clash between Arsenal and Newcastle United.
Arsenal clearly feel that the VAR decision that went against them at St James’ Park on Saturday, which allowed the Magpies’ winning goal to stand, was unjust.
Mikel Arteta branded the decision not to disallow the goal as a “disgrace.” Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer gave short shrift to Arteta’s rant, though.
There were several reasons why Anthony Gordon’s goal might have been ruled out. First, the ball appeared to go out of play. Then there was an apparent foul by Joelinton on Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes. Finally, Gordon himself was possibly in an offside position when the ball came his way.
As far as former Arsenal striker Ian Wright is concerned, the foul on Gabriel is the most obvious reason for why the strike should have been chalked off.
Taking to Twitter, Wright said, “I’m done with people saying this is not a foul.”
Last night, Shearer responded to Wright, stating it was “Never a foul man !!! Should your keeper not have collected it!!!ps love you.”

Arsenal must move on from Newcastle disappointment
Shearer is correct in the sense that David Raya ought to have done far better with the initial cross. Former Manchester United man Paul Scholes believes that Raya should be dropped in favour of former Arsenal No. 1 Aaron Ramsdale.
As for the apparent foul on Gabriel, it is easy to see why Arteta, Wright, and many Arsenal fans are all feeling so aggrieved. However, the time has now come to move on from this incident and match.
The Gunners have a Champions League clash against Sevilla on Wednesday evening to prepare for and they need to bounce back with a positive result against Burnley next time out in the Premier League. All focus now needs to be on these crucial upcoming fixtures. Continuing to argue and vent about the Newcastle result won’t do anyone any favours.
