Myles Lewis-Skelly and Declan Rice played important roles as England got their Thomas Tuchel era off to a winning start.

Tuchel started the Arsenal duo of Lewis-Skelly and Rice in his first team as England boss and his bold decision paid off after just twenty minutes.

Lewis-Skelly broke an England record by becoming the youngest player ever to score on his debut for the Three Lions with a composed finish as he broke the offside trap.

Jude Bellingham praised the ‘amazing’ Lewis-Skelly and it was the Real Madrid man’s sublime pass that set up the Arsenal defender. England boss Tuchel also had his say on the Hale End star after the match and seemed to end one raging debate surrounding the Arsenal ace.

Thomas Tuchel ends debate surrounding Myles Lewis-Skelly

Many Arsenal fans and pundits have debated whether Lewis-Skelly is better playing as a left back or as a number eight or six in the middle of midfield.

His ability on the ball and composure under pressure means he is well suited to a role in the centre of the park but equally his defensive tenacity and runs forward from left back have caught the eye.

Speaking at his post-match press conference following England’s 2-0 win over Albania, Tuchel has revealed what he believes is Lewis-Skelly’s best position.

Tuchel stated: “Second half he played as an eight because we wanted to take a little bit more risks and have closer connections between the players.

“I think his very best position is where he plays for Arsenal in the double six and left defender and double six inverted role, so he’s a fantastic football player.

“He has a very high understanding of the game, he’s very versatile and he can do I think a lot of things, we tried to play a little more conventional today because it’s easy to learn.”

Myles Lewis-Skelly grateful for trust shown by Tuchel

Speaking to Optus Sports after his England debut, Lewis-Skelly showed his gratitude towards Tuchel for the show of faith in giving him his first cap for his country.

Lewis-Skelly stated: “I’m lost for words really. I’m just so grateful for the manager to put trust in me just to show the team mates that played with me so much trust today and I’m just so happy.”

Fans expressed their pride at Lewis-Skelly for his goal and performance on his Three Lions debut and the defender just keeps going from strength to strength in his breakout season.

Mikel Arteta will be keen for the youngster to bring that momentum from England duty back to North London and prepare for their end of season run in.
