Troy Deeney thinks ‘excellent’ Arsenal star has been harshly treated by Mikel Arteta

Arsenal are one of just three teams with two wins out of two at the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s side ground out a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in their first game but were much more convincing in their 5-0 demolition of Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are building a squad deep enough to compete on all four fronts this season and Arsenal are interested in signing Piero Hincapie as their spending looks set to continue.

Having competition for places is the mark of a successful side but it gives the manager a headache when it comes to selection for big matches. Troy Deeney thinks one Arsenal star has been harshly treated at the start of the campaign.

Troy Deeney thinks Jurrien Timber was unlucky not to start against Manchester United

Writing for BBC Sport, Deeney has selected two Arsenal players in his latest Premier League team of the week.

The former Watford striker has singled out Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyokeres for their performances in the victory over Leeds, however, Deeney believes that Timber was unlucky not to start the opening game at Old Trafford.

Deeney stated: “Two goals for the right-back who was excellent on his first start of the season. Was probably a little bit unlucky not to start last week, but showed when Arsenal have a more attacking style he’s going to play more games.”

Timber missed a chunk of pre-season after undergoing ankle surgery at the end of last season but now looks back to his best after his display in North London.

Gyokeres was also praised by Deeney for his brace and in particular how he coped with the expectation placed on his shoulders following the injury to Kai Havertz.

Deeney stated: “The man of the moment: Viktor Gyokeres. This was a massive game for him in terms of expectations – with some people wanting him to score and others wanting him to fail.

“Granted, it was against Leeds, but he’s off the mark and took his goals well. Was he exceptional? No, but I think with the level of pressure, and after Kai Havertz went down, he stepped up and delivered – so you have to give him credit for that.”

Jurrien Timber could change position against Liverpool

Arteta has a wonderful array of defensive options heading into a huge clash at Anfield in the next Premier League fixture and despite impressing at right back, Timber could be in line for a position change.

Timber is an exceptional defender when it comes to one v one duels and could be used at left back against Liverpool in order to nullify the threat of Mohamed Salah.

The Dutch defender is comfortable playing on the left hand side and it would allow Ben White to return at right back should he recover from a niggle.

Although Riccardo Calafiori has had an excellent start to the season, there are concerns about his ability to cope with Salah’s pace and trickery.
