Arsenal are in danger of repeating their Alexander Isak mistake if they don’t sign ‘exquisite’ £70m player

Arsenal are still in the market for further attacking reinforcements despite adding their sixth signing of the summer.

Arsenal confirmed the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon and the Swedish striker takes the club’s spending to just under £200m this summer.

Andrea Berta has been decisive and efficient during his first transfer window at the club and has also renewed the contracts of Hale End duo Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.

Player sales are now the priority in order to raise funds for one more eye-catching acquisition and the Gunners must avoid making another mistake like they did with Alexander Isak back in 2022.

Arsenal decided not to sign Alexander Isak in 2022 after a ‘poor’ season

Speaking on the latest episode of ‘The Athletic FC’ podcast, journalist Chris Waugh has revealed the real reason that Arsenal chose not to sign Isak when they were first interested in the striker back in January 2022.

Waugh stated: “They [Newcastle] managed to get Isak a few years ago, because Arsenal had taken a long look at them, and then had decided after a poor season at Sociedad to go elsewhere. So Newcastle took that chance on him. The same with Sandro Tonali.

“A lot of clubs had looked at him for a long while, but that summer none of them had gone for him like Newcastle had”

Arsenal fans are worried about Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak this summer given that the title holders have already added Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz to their front line.

PSR doesn’t stop Arsenal making a move for Isak but the signing of Gyokeres means that the Gunners are now set to lose out on Isak once again.

Arsenal cannot repeat Alexander Isak mistake in Rodrygo pursuit

One of the players that the Gunners have been linked with this summer is Rodrygo of Real Madrid but face competition from multiple Premier League clubs.

Rodrygo has fallen out of favour at Real Madrid and didn’t have his most prolific of campaigns with the Spanish giants during the 2024-25 season.

However, the Brazilian has proven himself at the top level and at just 24 years of age, he would be seen as a long-term investment for the club.

Arsenal cannot lose out on another talent because of ‘poor’ form and know that they still need an explosive winger in their ranks that can produce something special when the chips are down.

Mikel Merino described Rodrygo as ‘exquisite’ and it is clear that the squad needs a bit more variety in their attacking options.

Rodrygo would be the perfect candidate to fill that void and if Berta can negotiate some player sales, a late move for the Real Madrid man would really complete an outstanding summer transfer window.
