Arsenal and Liverpool’s recruitment compared
Arsenal’s recruitment this season has been well documented in that they have failed to land a striker that has ultimately cost them any realistic chance of silverware.
However, it is an accumulation of transfer neglect that has left the Gunners in a position where they are – struggling to have shots on target let alone find the back of the net.
| Arsenal v Liverpool recruitment since 2020 | Arsenal | Liverpool |
| Attacking signings | 8 | 8 |
| Percentage of signings in forward areas | 27% | 35% |
| Money spent in total on forward players | €224.7m | €323.6m |
The Gunners have focused more on defensive recruitment and are reaping the rewards by currently having the best defence in the league.
However, there has not been the right balance between defensive and attacking recruitment and when players have been purchased in forward areas they haven’t been of the quality to transform the starting eleven.
The likes of Trossard, Kai Havertz and Fabio Vieira are all good players to have in the squad but none of those will elevate Arsenal to the next level.
Liverpool on the other hand have recruited the likes of Luiz Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai, who are all now set to play huge roles in the title victory.
Arteta faces biggest summer of recruitment in his managerial reign
The upcoming summer window will be the making or breaking of Arteta’s reign as Arsenal manager and he has done more than enough for the club to prove he is worth backing financially.
Stan Kroenke needs to bring the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Nico Williams and Martin Zubimendi to the Emirates Stadium in order to be those level-raising signings that Liverpool have produced.

Ambition such as the trio mentioned would also convince star players to renew contracts, Arsenal are yet to open talks with Saka and Saliba.
Whilst the current season cannot be written off with participation in the Champions League still ongoing, there also needs to be a realisation at the club that they simply cannot afford to get it wrong this summer in the transfer market.
