David Ornstein explains why Mikel Arteta is ‘happy’ despite Arsenal not signing a forward

Arsenal are running out of time to sign an attacker on transfer deadline day, but whilst fans are frustrated at the lack of incomings, Mikel Arteta may be fairly content.

Arsenal have sold Emile Smith Rowe, loaned out Fabio Vieira to FC Porto, and are set to sell Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace.

Raheem Sterling and Kingsley Coman were linked with deadline day moves to the Emirates, as wingers who could provide cover for Bukayo Saka, but as things stand, there appears to be no attacker arriving.

Arsenal fans are concerned at the lack of depth, and Arteta may be frustrated himself, given that the club tried and failed to sign Benjamin Sesko and Nico Williams.

Journalist David Ornstein has now claimed that despite the lack of incomings, Arteta will be happy with his options in attack for the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Ornstein claimed that despite a lack of a signing, Arteta will be confident that his attackers can compete for major honours this season.

“It’s not Playstation and Football Manager, where you can just pick someone up, choose who it is and on we go,” Ornstein stated of Arsenal’s attempts to sign a forward.

“If the market closes with Arsenal sticking with what they’ve got, I think they’ll be perfectly happy with that, and I do think they’ll be competitive for major honours again this season.

“If they manage to add before the deadline, then I’m sure the Emirates faithful will be very excited.”

Arsenal tried and failed to sign an attacker

Arteta was clearly well aware that one more attacker will have been a major boost to his options upfront, but Arsenal are not engaging in any panic-buys, indicating that they are happy to proceed with the current roster.

Arsenal have six attackers across the front three positions, but Reiss Nelson started just one game last season, whilst Gabriel Jesus is injured.

The failed moves for Sesko and Williams showed that Arsenal were willing to invest on certain targets, but did not want to sign for the sake of it, and they clearly believe that their level of depth is enough until January at least.
