Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester United had Gary Lineker thinking about one player the Gunners could sign to right their wrongs.
Now is not the time to lose composure, as Arsenal still sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
That being said, it’s impossible not to feel anxious after the defeat to Manchester United, as we’ve all seen how Mikel Arteta’s side can choke in the title race when the going gets tough.
Fortunately, Arsenal’s frailties against Man United are mendable; however, Lineker thinks one solution might have to come from abroad.
Fill the blanks, I think Arsenal have a __% chance of winning the Premier League.
Gary Lineker says Arsenal need to sign Julian Alvarez
Before the game, Arsenal had been struggling in attack in the Premier League.
Against United, the Gunners’ lack of creativity became even clearer, which prompted Lineker to speak about Arsenal’s transfer links to Julian Alvarez.
“They were linked with Julian Alvarez, who I know is not entirely happy with life at Atletico,” Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast.
“Now that is the sort of player who can handle the big occasion,” he added, referencing that Arsenal need a big-game player.
Do Arsenal need to sign a new attacker in January?
The Man Utd performance suggests so 🫣
“I mean, he’s a World Cup winner for crying out loud. So, if someone like that [was at] Arsenal, I think it’d be game over.”
While plenty of fans will agree with Lineker’s statement, there’s a problem in that Alvarez is not going to join Arsenal this month, with links seen as a potential summer move.
With that said, however, Andrea Berta should pay attention to Arsenal’s lacklustre approach in the final third, something that might need to be resolved this month while the window is still open.
Diego Simeone just gave a furious response to Julian Alvarez question
It’s clear to see why Arsenal would consider signing Alvarez, who, at the age of 25, has won two Premier Leagues, the World Cup, the Champions League, the Copa America and a list of other accolades.
The striker is a serial winner, and on top of that, he’s a goalscorer, having scored 130 career goals already.
If you’re Andrea Berta and Julian Alvarez is offered to you for £87m, would you sign him?
Too much money or a big bargain?
Like most things in football, the transfer won’t be easy, as Diego Simeone is passionate about his forward, as he made clear in a recent press conference.
Amid Alvarez’s questionable form, Simeone responded furiously to a question regarding whether fans still support the Argentine.
“Seriously? Are you seriously asking me that?” He asked in disbelief.
“The truth is that Julian Alvarez speaks for himself, because of the name he has, the authority he carries, and the career he’s built, right?”
Alvarez isn’t a player that Simeone will let leave Atletico easily, but if one figure can lure him to N5, it’s Berta, who facilitated the striker’s move to Madrid in the first place.
A winter move might look impossible, but with a look towards the summer, Berta should get his ducks in a row.
