Gary Neville has claimed that he’s impressed by the news that Arsenal are trying to sign David Raya this summer.

The Gunners have had an excellent transfer window so far. We’ve brought in Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice, but it looks like we’re not done just yet.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move to sign Raya, and Neville has given his thumbs up.

Gary Neville reacts as Arsenal eye move for David Raya

Everyone knew Arsenal would be very active in the transfer window this summer, but the last position we expected to be strengthened was goalkeeper.

Mikel Arteta has Aaron Ramsdale and Matt Turner at his disposal, while young Karl Hein has done fairly well in the few opportunities that he has been given.

Many of us felt our priorities are elsewhere on the pitch, but Arteta seems to be adamant that he wants a new goalkeeper this summer to replace Turner, who looks like he’s off to Nottingham Forest.

Gary Neville, who doesn’t usually have nice things to say about Arsenal, has supported the Gunners’ pursuit of David Raya.

He said on The Overlap: “That actually really impressed me the other day. I thought Ramsdale did struggle a little bit in the last five or 10 games.

“I actually like Raya at Brentford, so I thought the idea of signing him was again, another sort of message that he’s not taking what happened last season lightly.”

Arteta clearly believes that competition for places makes his players perform better, and that’s exactly why he’s keen to sign Raya this summer.

The Brentford man is a fantastic goalkeeper. His shot-stopping is brilliant on its own, but his ability with the ball at his feet is up there with the best in the country.

Turner did a good job for Arsenal last season, but he never really made Ramsdale fear for his place. Raya, if we do sign him, will definitely push our number one to his limits, and that can only be a good thing.

Fabrizio Romano revealed last night that talks are progressing for Raya and all parties want to get this deal over the line in the coming days.
