Real Madrid appear to have reignited their interest in Arsenal defender William Saliba, if recent reports are to be believed.

It comes as a huge summer transfer window awaits both the Gunners and Los Blancos, in terms of rebuilding some of their squad.

For Arsenal, much of the focus will be on the possible forward signings that Andrea Berta can make to improve the team, alongside a midfielder or two.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, are looking at a rework in their backline and midfield, following a difficult few weeks.

Arsenal’s victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League may well have accelerated some of that, not least when it comes to their interest in William Saliba.

Saliba has been heavily linked with a transfer to Real Madrid, as the Spanish giants look at new centre-back options for the team.

The Frenchman, aged just 24, has shown his quality as a top-level defender with plenty of his best years still ahead of him.

Saliba believes he is among the best in the world, though he claims there is still plenty more to come from himself.

It’s little surprise, then, that L’Equipe claims that Real Madrid are making another concerted effort to try and sign the defender this summer.

The report claims that Saliba’s camp has been in talks with Real Madrid for “weeks”, with chiefs at the club willing to offer him a role as a leader at the club.

While it’s stated that he is unlikely to force a move, his dwindling contract situation could have a major impact on things.

Andrea Berta will have plenty of different plates to spin this summer at Arsenal, with the sporting director expected to strengthen the squad.

Despite that, perhaps his most important moves could involve keeping those in the team for the future.

Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes and Saliba all have just two years left under contract, putting some pressure on keeping them tied down on new extensions.

Saliba has reassured fans over his contract situation, but the latest reports will do little to ease those fears.

The only thing that possibly could is a new deal, which must suddenly become a priority for Berta at Arsenal to avoid losing him.
